The posts are the part that needs the most attention in a coastal Florida climate, because the fasteners and base plates take the brunt of the salt air and pool chemistry.
One compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Wellington: Pella glass railing posts are not universally drilled. The hole pattern on a Reserve post from 2015 will not always line up with the base plate on a 2021 panel. Before you order anything, check the underside of the top rail or the inside face of an end post for a small white sticker with the Pella order number and series code. Signs Your Pella Glass Railing Systems Is Failing
- Panel wobble at the top corner. This usually means the glass clamp rubber has compressed or the clamp itself has loosened from years of thermal expansion. If left alone, the glass will eventually sit metal-on-metal and chip.
- Rust bleeding from the base plate. In Wellington’s humidity and pool-side environments, powder-coated aluminum posts can still corrode where the coating was scratched during the original install. Once the base plate starts to lift, the post loses its load path.
- Milky or white haze along the bottom edge of the glass. That is water wicking into the gasket channel and sitting against the glass lamination. It will not clear up on its own, and it is a sign the weep holes in the bottom rail are blocked or were never drilled correctly.
- Spider cracks radiating from a drilled hole. Tempered glass in railing systems is drilled before tempering. If a crack appears at a hole, the panel has been over-stressed, usually because a post shifted and put the glass into a bind.
- Gate no longer latches square. The latch will tell you the truth about the whole run. If a railing gate sags or the striker no longer lines up, one of the end posts has moved, and the glass panels are now carrying weight they were never designed to carry.

When tempered glass lets go, it does not crack slowly like annealed glass; it shatters all at once into thousands of small cubes. If a post base is pulling out of a pool deck or a clamp has loosened, that panel is holding just enough energy to turn a simple repair into a trip to the ER.
What you can safely do: check every post base for visible rust or lifting, gently press on each panel to feel for movement, and take photos of any sticker or label you can find. What you should not do: remove the glass from a post, loosen the base plate bolts, or attempt to shim a panel that is sitting out of level.
